There is no better introduction to Srinagar than seeing it from the water. Shikaras glide across Dal Lake through a world of floating gardens, carved houseboats and vendors selling fresh vegetables directly from their boats. A standard ride lasts one to two hours and can be booked at almost any ghat along the boulevard.
The classic route takes you past the floating vegetable market (best in the early morning), the artist-painted shikaras and a good stretch of open lake with the mountains rising beyond the treeline. Ask your boatman to drift slowly — the magic is in the pace.
Sunset is the most requested time for good reason: the light turns the mountains soft pink and the city lights begin to shimmer on the water. Sunrise is quieter and just as lovely, especially in spring and autumn.
What you'll need: a sweater or shawl even in summer (the lake breeze is cool), a camera, and small change for tips and the chai sellers who float alongside. Agree on the price and route before boarding — your travel planner can also arrange a private ride as part of your package.
One tiny ritual we always recommend: reach out and test the water. It is colder and softer than you expect, and it somehow makes the whole trip feel real.
