Kashmir changes personality with every season, and the 'right' time to visit really depends on what you want out of the trip. If you are after blooming gardens and clear lake mornings, plan around late March to May, when Srinagar's tulip garden opens and the orchards along the Srinagar-Pahalgam road turn pink and white.
Summer (June to August) is the most comfortable for family sightseeing. The valley stays pleasantly cool while the rest of India bakes, and Gulmarg's meadows are at their greenest — perfect for the gondola and long walks. This is also the busiest window, so book vehicles and stays well in advance.
Autumn arrives in September and lingers through October, painting the Chinar trees in russet and gold. It is the photographer's season, with crisp air, clear skies, and far fewer tourists than summer. Pahalgam and Sonmarg are especially lovely in early autumn.
Winter (December to February) is for snow lovers. Gulmarg becomes a proper ski destination, Dal Lake freezes at the edges, and the whole valley slows into a cosy, cinematic kind of quiet. Roads are kept open but always confirm conditions with your driver before heading into the mountains.
Our honest advice: there is no bad month — only a different version of Kashmir. Tell your travel planner what you love (sunshine, snow, crowds or calm) and the itinerary can be built around the ideal season for it.
