The Gulmarg gondola is the second-highest cable car in the world, and for most travellers it is the single greatest highlight of a Kashmir trip. It runs in two stages: the first climbs from Gulmarg to Kongdori at around 3,000 metres, and the second continues to Apharwat Peak when snow and weather allow.
Stage one is a gentle, family-friendly ride above the treeline with extraordinary views over the meadow and the Pir Panjal range. On clear days you can see as far as Nanga Parbat. The queues are longest in summer and around the December-January snow season, so aim to arrive at the station by 9 a.m. — your driver can help you time it.
Stage two operates mainly in winter and requires a valid government-issued ID and, on busy days, a ski or snow gear check. If it is closed on your day, Kongdori's slopes and viewpoints are still plenty rewarding on their own.
What to carry: a light jacket even in summer (it gets brisk at height), sunglasses, and cash for tickets since card machines can be temperamental at the summit. In winter, add gloves and non-slip boots — the walkways get icy.
A practical tip from our drivers: pair the gondola with a morning meadows walk and a lazy Kashmiri lunch back in town. Gulmarg deserves a full day, not a rushed hour.
